…Into the Woods!
Beautiful girls, handsome princes, a fairy god-mother, love, gold, the palace, the wedding, the wolf, the woods, happily ever after – they are all the stock ingredients of children’s storybooks.
You get all this and more in Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s grown-up fairy tale, Into the Woods.
Here the mix also includes curses, lechery, theft, seduction, pain, magic, infidelity, loss, betrayal, mayhem and death. It’s quite a journey and, when combined with Stephen Sondheim’s witty songs and FAMDA’s fabulous cast, there is a magical theatrical experience ahead.
The saga combines elements of Grimm Brothers’ fairy tales such as Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel and Jack and the Beanstalk plus an original story about a baker and his wife who have to reverse a curse in order to have a child.
By the end of Act I all the characters have achieved what they wanted, having been involved in some skullduggery to do so.
In Act II the dreams start to unravel and we learn not only that “nice is different than good” but also to be careful what you wish for and that all actions have their consequences.
Into the Woods opened on Broadway in 1987 where it ran for 764 performances. In a year dominated by The Phantom of the Opera, the original production won the 1988 New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award and the Drama Desk Award for Best Musical, and the original cast recording won a Grammy Award. Tony Awards went to Joanna Gleason for Best Actress in a Musical, James Lapine for Best Book of a Musical and Stephen Sondheim for Best Original Score.
South Gippsland has its own version of this highly successful Broadway musical when “Into the Woods” was staged at the Foster War Memorial Arts Centre between 2 and 17 October 2009.
