STRANGERS ON A TRAIN tells the story of two men; Guy Haines, a promising architect, and Charles Bruno, a charming but unhinged playboy, meet by chance on a train journey. Bruno suggests a sinister idea: a perfect “exchange murder”. He will kill Guy’s estranged wife, and free him to marry his lover, if Guy kills Bruno’s overbearing father in return. Guy dismisses the idea as a dark joke – but Bruno takes it seriously. When Bruno carries out his part of the bargain, Guy becomes trapped in a nightmare of guilt, blackmail, and moral corrosion.

The play unfolds as a psychological chess game, – an ordinary man caught in the consequences of another’s madness, and a chilling study of how evil can infect the seemingly innocent.

Guy Haines
Ambitious, decent, but morally weak as he increasing unravels as a result of Bruno’s actions. The audience must identify with him as he spirals into Bruno’s world. Age mid 20’s to late 40’s.

Charles Bruno
Charismatic, manipulative, and disturbing childlike. He represents chaos, fascination, and amorality. Age 30’s – 50.

Anne Faulkner
Guy’s intelligent and supportive fiancée, who begins to suspect something dark under Guy’s anxiety. She represents stability against Guy’s growing turmoil. Age early 20’s to mid 30’s (depending in the age of Guy).

Elsie Bruno
Bruno’s mother. Indulgent of Bruno, conflicted and totally blind to her son’s instability. Age 50’s-60’s.

Arthur Gerard
A private investigator who has long been associated with the Bruno family and is aware of the Bruno personalities. Sharp, observant, and methodical. Age 35-50’s.

Frank Myers
Guy’s work colleague. Tries to help Guy. Represents normalcy and professional grounding. Age: Same age as Guy.

Robert Treacher
A colleague/friend in Guy’s social circle. Provides contrast to Guy’s unravelling life. Age: Same age as Guy.

This is an American play set in the 1950’s with plenty of references to American locals. So, a slight American accent would suffice but doesn’t have to be broad. A ‘mid-Atlantic’ accent.

Auditions will be held at the Foster War Memorial Arts Centre, 79 Main Street, Foster.

Bookings for auditions through trybooking.
The date for auditions will be Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th December at 10.00am to 4.00pm

If call-backs are required, you will be advised on the day. Anybody who can’t make it can email theatre@famda.org.au to arrange an alternative audition time if needed.

This is a play in which experienced actors can get their teeth into. However, it is a wordy play, so it is vital that lines be learnt as soon as possible after casting of parts.
